The Non-Conformist Oath

There was a golden period of comedians in the 70s and early 80s. I don’t care for too many contemporary comedians because the ones I’ve seen, are too crude and foul mouthed for me to enjoy. For example, early George Carlin talked about driving on a parkway and parking in a driveway. (I clarify early George Carlin because later in his life, his routine was so crude and foul mouthed that my wife and I walked out of his performance at TPAC in the early 2000s)

Another comedian that I liked was Steve Martin (a wild and crazy guy). Before Saturday Night Live went off the rails too, I watched him do a skit years ago, that I refer to as the Non-conformist Oath.  As I recall, it goes something like this: “Repeat after me, I promise to be different! I promise to be unique! I promise not to repeat things other people say!” If your imagination is good (or you’re old enough and saw it on tv), you can imagine an audience enthusiastically repeating the first two phrases with half the audience repeating the third phrase and the other half laughing.

God created humans as one human race. Despite our differences, we can coexist. But He  redeemed His children to be more than just humans together; He created us to be of one accord as His Church.

Generally, people want to be with like-minded people who have common interests and enjoy similar things. There are some churches, like ours, that you walk into and quickly see that we are a healthy group of people that share our love for God and enjoy being together. There are other churches that I’ve walked into and wondered why I was there because the people weren’t in a healthy group.

If you agree with me and are glad you are a part of HHCC or another good family church, don’t hesitate to share this with someone there and thank God for blessing you with a good group.

“And the people of Benjamin gathered themselves together behind Abner and became one group and took their stand on the top of a hill.” - 2 Samuel 2:25 ESV

“Now the full number of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but they had everything in common. And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all.” - Acts 4:32-33 ESV

“And all who believed were together and had all things in common.” - Acts 2:44 ESV
