Good Eye Sight

I’ve reached the age where cataract surgery was necessary. But I’m getting ahead of myself.  I’ve needed glasses for vision since I was in the third grade. So, for all my collective memory I’ve always needed glasses.

Even though that was, ahem, a little more than a half century ago, I still remember clearly getting that first pair of glasses.  My mom took my sister and myself to the eye doctor after we got home from school on an early winter day.  So, by the time we drove in and they fitted my new glasses and it was early dusk by the time we walked out of the office.  I remember looking up and seeing the detail of the Moon (as far as I knew, it was just a big ball of light at night).  It finally hit my why people referred to the man in the moon. There was a level of excitement and wonder as I saw detail that I couldn’t remember ever seeing before.

Back to the cataracts. I go to an ophthalmologist once a year so I knew I was growing cataracts many years before I had the surgery. The doctor would say something like “your cataracts are a 1.5 on a 4 point scale”. Maybe I’d get a question like “do you drive at night”. But I’d always get the comment “don’t worry, you’ll know when it’s time to do something about them”.

She was right. About 2 years ago, I started noticing that I’d have to drive closer to the street signs before I could make them out and I required good light to read. But the kicker was when I started having trouble reading music to play fast enough to play the music even on songs I’d played successfully before. In short, I knew it was time.

After healing from the surgery, I started noticing little things like the tv was much sharper and it was much brighter outside than I remembered. In fact, I felt some of that same excitement and wonder that I remembered from being a 3rd grade kid with my first pair of glasses.

“Turning to the disciples, He said privately, 'Blessed are the eyes which see the things you see, for I say to you, that many prophets and kings wished to see the things which you see, and did not see them, and to hear the things which you hear, and did not hear them.’” - Luke 10:23-24 NASB

“But get up and stand on your feet; for this purpose I have appeared to you, to appoint you a minister and a witness not only to the things which you have seen, but also to the things in which I will appear to you; rescuing you from the Jewish people and from the Gentiles, to whom I am sending you, to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the dominion of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who have been sanctified by faith in Me.’” - Acts 26:16-18 NASB1995

When I think about the spiritual realm, I look forward to those moments of excitement and wonder as God opens my spiritual eyes.
